Wanted: Damaged carbon frame ~56cm

Posted on
  • Trying to put together a bike for road racing, on the cheap; partly because i'm bored with taking the rack and mudguards off my road bike every time I want to race it, and partly because I fancy another project. In particular, because I have some experience in building things out of carbon, I'm looking for a crash-damaged carbon frame which I could repair.

No question of liability; if I buy a damaged frame, I do it completely at my own risk.

Anyone have anything which fits the bill?

  • How much you got to spend?

  • Depends what's out there, but preferably less than £150 for frame & forks.

  • I have a damaged 2005 Trek 5.2 that has split around the join of the headtube & downtube.
No other damage, would let it go for £120? (frame and forks, headset, and bonty race x-light seatpost)

  • Thanks, PM sent.

  • tgotb Can you report back on this?
I would love to know how this goes!

  • I have a 2008 Specailzed roubaix with a cracked DS chain stay if you're interested. £50

  • Gabe, if the OP doesn't want it I might be interested, something to practice on!
Do you have any pics of the damage?

  • I don't at all want to piss on the parade, and wish you all the best with your project but I'd be careful if you do a repair on this and end up actually racing it in an event... it's one thing taking a risk of injuring yourself but if you take someone else out at the same time as a result of the repair failing they might not be very appreciative.

Again, not meaning to be a knob-accidents can and will always happen but carbon is renowned for giving out quite instantly and getting new front teeth will cost much more than a decent undamaged frame!

  • Gabe - thanks for the offer; I'm going with Branwen's frame, so feel free to offer it to Adroit.

Chompy - good point well made. I've got quite a lot of experience engineering, building and breaking lightweight and highly stressed carbon components, so I think i know what I'm doing. Rest assured that I won't ride it unless I'm confident in the repair, and I won't race it unless I'm very confident indeed. Worst case scenario, I have to replace the entire head tube; once I'm done, the bond between that and the frame should be as stiff/strong as the original....

  • Anyone still looking for damaged CF frames? Ive got an 07 Focus Cayo with a cracked drive side seat stay. Could let it go for the £150 mark.

  • send it to carbon repair, and have it mended just like new
