Open Pro - Normal, CD, or Ceramic?

Posted on
  • Hello people...

I'm looking into getting a black rim with ceramic braking surface 32 or 36h, 700c.
Thinking about Open Pro but was wondering if anyone knew of any a bit cheaper?
And obviously if anyone has one lying around let me know.

    Cheers
    Tom

  • Chinese made ones on eBay.

    You pays your money ......

  • Please delete.

  • yawn, thread needs to be merged

    cd and ceramic different

    ceramic last for ages

  • If you are running brakes, then yes ceramic is worth the extra money.
    If not, go for CD.

  • Marcho - it's a good idea to search before you start new posts. Especially in bikes and bits, and in mechanics and fixing. This is because a lot of people use these parts as a information resource and creating numerous threads about the same topic makes finding information difficult.

Sometime searching for popular bike products like Mavic wheels, nitto bars, etc. can be a mission becuase of all of the sale threads. For this reason, try using the advanced search and removing "prefixes" - this will take out all sale and wanted threads.

As you've started another thread on open pros, it might be a good idea to post in the modrators thread here:https://www.lfgss.com/thread48164-77.html#post2272563

and ask them to merge your thread with one of the others. In this case as there seem to be so many open pro threads, perhaps it might be nice if you posted the links to all of them in the mod's thread and asked them to do a big merge, so that the next person after information doesn't have to trawl through them all.

  • I did search - the only threads I could find re: open pros are in the classifieds, if you can find any then i'll close the thread and defrost the humble pie. Thanks for the advice wharry.

    really?

  • Hello,

I'm looking for rims for a new pair of wheels and in particular, after some Open Pro Ceramic rims, which as sods law dictates after getting dream hubs, seem to have been discontinued, but hoping there must be some out there unloved and unused, in 28h...

Any of you good folks know of somewhere that might have any? If I can't find 'em I'll have to go with the new Open Pro they've released with the bogging stickers and machined braking surface, or maybe make the jump to ambrosio excellights.

    Any help much appreciated...

    chompy

  • Google might know...

  • No shit. You could assume that I have tried that, and as I say, they are discontinued so not readily available, hence asking if anyone has a pair kicking around or knows a small shop not on the interwebz that might have any in the store room.

    but do carry on.

  • Ambrosio

  • you ride on 'em? How do they compare to the Open Pros?

  • Ambrosio's are very good rims. Supposedly built better than Mavic's and as such are easier to build.

  • But are not available in ceramic, no? Therefore not much use. OP are you absolutely sure they ever came in 28h? I was thinking about building up some 28h hubs to these once but as far as I established they were only available in 32 or 36h.

That's definitely all I've seen for sale over the last few years anyway, and now you would be doing well to find them at all...

  • tokyo fixed have them in 32 and 36 I believe.

  • maybe Francis Thurmer at Cycle plus in High Wycombe may have some. Sorry don't have a number

  • They were made in 28H

Got a pair on the Merckx.

  • Try some of the wheelbuilders?

  • cheers for the replies folks,

I've definitely seen folk with 28's in them as dmczone says...

Will try calling a few small wheelbuilders for sure-I just got my hubs so I'm of course over excited and most small places are closed over the holidays and beyond. There's a small place near where my mum lives that I'm definitely going to stop into when I pass back that way on route to London-it's like a very messy aladdin's cave of bike bits and wheels and I may even get them built up there if it's open and he has something suitable. I think it is somewhere like this that is most likely to find them... Searching online has only dug up several year old classified ads and I don't want to be *that *guy.

Fucking hilarious you can get NOS 1978 Mavic montherly or limited edition campag barcelona/atlantas with ease on places like ebay but you can't get a 3 year old pair of open pro ceramics anywhere!

    thanks again in the meantime...
