Wanted: Touring frame (or full bike) 54cm

  • Steel, 700s, lots of braise ons.

  • I have a bright yellow 2004 Hewitt Cheviot that is not being used and it would do me (and the family finances) no harm if I converted it into cash.

The frame is in Reynolds 631, smooth (fillet brazed?) joins rather than the lugged construction on the more recent Cheviots. More braze-ons that you might ever imagine necessary, including a dynamo bracket that now serves as a bracket for a fork mounted light, above the low-rider bosses.

Top tube is 55cm centre to centre, slightly sloping. Seat tube is 50cm, down tube is 64cm. Chainstays are 46cm and the stand-over height half way along the top tube is about 80cm.

Built up with Deore triple chainset, XT front mech, Deore LX rear mech, Alivio pod shifter thingies on flat bars, lovely Magura HS11 hydraulic rim brakes, cane creek aheadset, system x stem, ergonomic bar ends and grips, Deore M510 hubs on Mavic A319 rims, Vittoria randonneur on front and Schwalbe M+ on rear. XT seatpost (or I could include a Suntour suspension post if you'd rather), B17 saddle, M520 pedals, black SKS guards.

I'd be after £500 for this - a machine that could take you round the world. If this price is too high, I'd rather keep it for when I have time for touring again.

  • Wow, that's a lot of bike! I think you should hold onto it and go around the world on it yourself-- I'd hate to come between a person and their (obviously much loved) touring rig.

I'm actually looking for something a little sportier, like a roadster/light touring road bike. Something like an 80's galaxy. Thanks though!

  • Cheers - I am heartened by that response, and maybe I should stop thinking about selling the bike and just bide my time until I get a chance to do it justice.

  • I have an early 80s Claude Butler Majestic- same as the Galaxy

Needs a bit of work ( possibly the headset and a longer BB ) but is ready to roll

The vintage bike cave has one up for sale, but its in better nick than that.

  • These days with universal fitting pannier racks and mudguards you dont even need to narrow your search down to bikes with eyelets and rack fixing points. Even less so if you are only going to do light touring.
DONT get a galaxy, there is nothing remotely sporty about them and there are similar & oft far better bikes from the same era for a lot less money... Revel Romany, British Eagle touristique, Orbit all touring bikes at least the equal of a galaxy. Then step up to Nigel Dean's, Hewitts etc Raleigh Randonneur was a great bike but more for loaded touring tbh.

If you can find yourself a 531C frame in your size then I'd say go for it and build up, most of them had eyelets for mudguards at least and they are livelier than bog standard 531/531ST or 631 which is an out & out touring tube.

  • I have a Raliegh touring bike, 53 cm from memory 531ST tubing record hubs with 5spd cassette specialites TA cranks and chain rings deore rear mech deore front mech campag headset and probably bb too.. looking for 160 as the frame and hubs are worth that alone, bike is at my work in bow so if you want to see it just let me know.. cheers Dave

  • Taken on my phone so not the best

  • IV got a 54/54 swinnerton cycles custom built 531st bike from early 80s im selling. Its a beautiful darkish green, almost perfect paint, with top quality chrome socks on the forks and a chromed chain stay. Wheels are 27' though but I have a nice old campy record wheelset that has a 6 speed block on it at the moment but I can put a new wide ratio 7 speed on it and redish the wheel if you wanted. Mechs are a rear sach heuret new success touring mech, with a simplex on the front. Bar and stem cinellis, levers drilled Weinman. IV also got a brooks colt, the ultimate touring saddle that is in quite good condition, and not yet completely broken in so you can still make it yours! Brakes are dia compe cantis so you could put some v's there if you preferred. Cranks are stronglight 99 bis, beautiful drilled touring double but it's got a 52/42 at the moment.

    Looking for £250. Cheers
