  • Bless you.

  • got a new bontrager tyre, dobe abt 20miles n a pebble went into the tyre but nt the tube, im guessing theres a second layer, is it possible tat i just superglue or glue gun tat hole? abt 2-3 mm
    thanks

  • Wot?

  • gut a blnt instment liek end of tyre levre or smth and gut pbble out den put sum patches on the inside of the tyre where the hole is to strngthen tat.

  • if i understand what you are saying, if there is a pebble in your tyre, by gluing the hole, it is going to encourage the pebble to go towards the inner tube instead of working its way out.

super glue dries hard so you dont really want that in a tyre

  • the pebble is already out, shall try n patch it in the inside then! thanks

  • yeah, no point trying to do anything to the outside of a tyre really.

  • if it's just a cut, then you can superglue it. depending on size though.

  • Kirk. You can try a patch on the inside but if the hole in the tyre is too big you'll notice a sort of lip bulging up when you re inflate. If that's too pronounced it's only a matter of time until your tube starts poking through like a hernia. So keep an eye on it. If it's bulging too much or the tube is visible, the tyre's a write off to be honest. The alternative is usually a blow out.

PS if that sort of thing happens to you when you're out and about you can usually use a tyre boot (which come with some packets of patches and is just a thin strip of plastic) or a 20 quid note if you have one in your pocket (they are tough enough). This lines the hole and stops the tube forcing its way out until you get home.

  • or a £5 note....

  • ^ Not as tough though ;]

  • depends if you gonna skid it!

  • Train ticket can work as a tyre boot.

  • £50 if youre a skidder.

  • a packet of condoms work as a tyre boot - the foil packet, not the rubber johny. Or a crisp packet folded if you're not riding "prepared"

  • I use gold leaf myself but each to their own....

  • According to Sheldon (praise be unto him) it doesn't actually matter how many punctures you get in your tyre until said punctures start threatening the integrity of the inner fabric. See this page:

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tyres.html#replacement

Basically if you've got a pebble digging into your tyre but it hasn't actually ruptured straight through, it can be dug out and the hole ignored - if it has completely ruptured it, use a tyre boot as the other guys say, but if it a tyre boot won't save whatever you've done to it, it's time to replace the whole tyre. No need for superglue in any case.

  • thanks alot guys, learnt a lesson!

  • £50 if youre a skidder.

  • Hi,

I was just pumping up my new inner tubes on my new wheels/tyres, i got around 80 psi when the inner tube burst, it appears it burst due to the holes around the wheel where the spokes are...what can I do?!?!

    Cheers

  • F**k Im stupid, I need rim tape...this is my first build

  • We've all been there, that and bulges ---> exploding tubes...

  • top work for figuring it out yourselves.

    (I've done it too)

  • There are basically two choices: Gatorskin Hardshells or Marathon Plus. Vittoria Rubinos aren't really going to help much, although they're decent all purpose tyres.
Normal Gatorskins are ok, but the Hardshell version is much tougher.
Had six punctures last winter (2010/11) on Conti 4000s but have had none since swithcing to Hardshells. But no tyre is completely puncture proof.

  • Spontaneous tyre combustion?

My front wheel has decided it's had enough of the heat, and exploded. Well, made it a hissssssss noise, and deflated itself in about 10 seconds.

It's been sat for about 17 hours, and this is the first puncture. Wut?
