  • These cranks. Think they are Chorus but not 100% sure:

yep, chorus from the c-record era.

  • Could be Athena too

  • the athena ones that i have aren't raised around the bolt like those ones are.

  • Case Solved!!! - Decent outcome too - I've always admired Bob Jackson's work!!!

Hi James, Well yes that looks like one of ours and the number is right with the period. On our Master sheet 4854 was built in 1964

    Donald

can you confirm that is the right email?

  • Just checked their webpage and the contact address they list is
Factory@bobjacksoncycles.demon.co.uk - I just clicked on the link on their homepage to send my original email.
I take it you've still not heard then - curious, because they got back to me in a matter of minutes!

  • Sent another email. Failing that I will call tomorrow. The suspense is killing me!

  • the athena ones that i have aren't raised around the bolt like those ones are.

That's correct, the crankset design changed a couple of times for this gruppo.

  • def not a mercian... ideas as to ephgrave/mal rees/claud butler bi-lam etc etc, but nothing definitive..

potentially extended ephgrave italia lugs on a an ephgrave built rory o'brien frame...?

    any ideas chaps?

  • any serial number?

  • Yeah it's 244, as stamped on the bb, don't know if you can make it out in the pic, as I'm on my phone...

  • ^^^ those lugs are amazing whatever it is, its nice

  • The number's in the correct position for Ephgrave, but it should be prefixed with a couple of letters according to this info;
    http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/frame-numbering.html
Mal Rees looks like an option.

  • yeah the position and three number serial code was what made me think ephgrave, and the head lugs do have similar traits to his italia series, but are made much more interesting than his run of the mill italia frames, and this is a nicely built track, so im presuming its not a lesser ephgrave. the lack of letters was what suggested ephgrave for o'brien, as I found another frame that was '245' or something ridiculously close, which had two numbers on, one for o'brien, and one for ephgraves personal mark... that said the lugs werent the same, so its a complete mystery...

this frame (on sale from the devil himself) was the one that made me think of mal rees, but I dont know anything about frame numbers or builders, though I know a few well recognised blokes worked for the company...

either way, im building it up like it is cause it looks GAWG and I love it, may pick out the lugs in the same yellow, but worried it might look tacky. will respray eventually, but would like to ID it first. keep an eye on current projects for post xmas developments!

  • I should imagine that identifying this frame would be quite easy with this bottom bracket.
    Reynolds 653 frame, English.

YES!!! frame 4103 is a Bob Jackson... made in 1960... Just got off the phone from them !!! woohhooooooo... not bad for £40 !

  • ^^wyrmskull, that's not a Gazelle.. Seatcluster doesn't match.. Lugs are IIRC Bocama longpoint, you could investigate from that.. Good luck!

  • there were some columbus tubed frames made of a mixture of cinelli and gazelle parts
that were never officially released, could be one of those or maybe not!!
raleigh professionals had a similar seatcluster but the pics on sheldon of a similar coloured
frame dont have longpoint lugs at the front and has bolt on chrome cable clips, where as
mine has the welded clips for the cables, the forks are completely different as well

  • Nice one apolloxl - glad you got to the bottom of it - what a bargain!

  • 1960 bob jackson for £40, god damn it!

  • Hi. Im Jonathan from Flensburg Germany and I just bought this. no numbers no engravings-nothing. original color was gold. bb has english threading. ~2,5kg height is 52 original headbadge seems to have been oval .

  • ^ looks like a raleigh to me.

  • seattube is 26.8 mm
