Aende track frame,which tubing?

Posted on
  • I have an Aende track frame and I know its definitely not standard 531 tubing, it could be Colombus but the buyer said Reynolds 531. Anyway its 59cm top tube centre to centre, 59cm seat tube c-c, (61cm centre to top)
frame weighs 1849g which seems extremely light for such a large track frame.
Anybody have any idea what kind of tubing it could be? Ill try get photos up later.

The forks weigh 653g, same size forks from my Benotto track frame weigh 873g, havent weighed the Benotto frame but it feels alot heavier and I believe it's Colombus Zeta

  • Pics? Used to have a Aende lo-pro and think that was a bit of a mix of tubings, 'Pongo' Braithwaite used too by all accounts mix it up a bit. But you sound lucky to have one theres a under lying big respect for frames by him on here

  • Pretty sure mine is columbus SL, which from reading up he seemed to use a fair bit (though as simpson says, he does mix). SL comes in a bit lighter than 531, though not massively. Post some pics and maybe someone will be able to identify it? Diameter, profiling etc can be used to an extent.

  • Had a 57cm SLX frame and this is lighter

  • What makes you think the frame is an Aende? It seems to lack some of the obvious clues like drilled lugs although you pics are not very clear. A lot of his frames aren't numbered either so even if he was alive checking the original order spec would be difficult.

  • I think a better way to approach this would be with a pair of calipers.

  • The guy who sold it says it was an Aende, I just wanted a track frame at the time.

2281 is stamped on the underside of the bb shell, anyone know what kind of serial system he used?
frame is now 1840g! Got the last bit of paint off. Was gonna paint the lugs with gold enamel but Im polishing them like the rest of it. Gonna have contrasting finishing in certain areas

  • Is there some sort of unkown place in Dublin where you find all these cool fixed gear parts????

  • I got my Benotto in Dublin but the Aende came from the UK.

  • I don't believe mine has a serial number, but it's at my folks so I can't check.

Don't columbus BB shells have ridges (SLX) or a little dove in them or something? (You may want to check this before taking the BB out :) )

  • My Aende frame and forks had the number 555 stamped into them but the Aende track frame I had didn't have any serial number.

  • Seatpost diameter?

SLX has rifling up the bottom end of the seat tube which you can feel if you finger up the bottom bracket shell (ooh err).

  • The bottom bracket shell is solid inside, no access to other tubes. Gas holes near the top of the seat stays. 27.2mm seatpost

top tube double butted 25.4mm, downtube double butted 28.6mm, seat tube 28.6mm

  • I'd guess SL or SLX. Did you spot a Columbus logo on the fork steerer?

  • This seems the right place for this, just bought a lovely aende track frame with a sloping tube! Not lo pro but abit aggressive geometry! Now the Lugs are drilled like aende used to, only the head tube and seat tube at the top, bb and forks are not! Forks don't have much room for it anyways! Question is the person sold it with a 27.2 seat post size, neither of my campagnolo seatpost fit, 26.8 or 27.2 so is probably a 27mm but I really want to know the tubing seems light I have another Columbus bike and it feels like it, but then again I only held a 531c once and that was light too!
There's no number or identification in any form from what I can see! Any help would be much appreciate it, better pictures tomorrow day light!

  • as they're (or were) built in Nottingham I'd hazard a guess that it's reynolds, the lo-pro one I owned years ago was

  • He used many different tube types. The frames were custom built and he would have used a tube type recommended for or by the customer. Whatver it is it will be of decent quality. Enjoy the frame.

  • ^Correct. My Aende TT frame is Reynolds 653 but I have seen Aendes in just about every Reynolds and Columbus tubing.

1840g is too light for any version of 531. If it is Reynolds it would have to be 653 or more likely 753 track. It is also too light for Columbus SL, SLX, TSX or MAX. More likely to be EL or its predecessor PL.

You can find standard-build frame weights for Reynolds and Columbus tubes here:

Are you sure it is Aende? The shot in seat stays are correct, but the lugs don't look typical. Pongo had the habit of pencilling in a note of the colour scheme on the fork steerer tube.

If it is Aende you are going to like it. If you don't like it, PM me.

  • Thanks, the frame was painted black by the previous owner and clearly nt a good job as if you peel it off you can see blue/red/white convination! And indeed I'm very happy with it, still needs to get finish with a saddle and pedals which I'll be getting for xmas
