Got one of these in the mail today. Planning on using it on my Rando mounted to the front rack.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260894133403?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1741wt_1396It's really bright and feels pretty solid. I don't know about the 900 lumens, but i have some quality lights with ~300 lumens and it's def brighter than them. The spot is a bit on the small side so i think i'm going to get the dremel and open up the reflector a bit to make it cover a bigger area. Not sure how well it would withstand rain but at £20 it's not that big of a deal.

Xtothepost: If money was no object which front lights would you buy if you were needed at least 12hrs of high-power juice?

So, given your analysis of that thread and any other cycle light analysis you have conducted in your life:

For the record I like the Exposure stuff but wonder if I could get something that would fit the TT bike and Kinesis better and provide more light for longer.

If money was no object which front lights would you buy if you were needed at least 12hrs of high-power juice?Based on my analysis of that thread etc., but not on personal experience, I'd go for a Magicshine MJ-872 with the Openlight 17.4Ah battery, which does 8h at full (1600lm) power, which in theory should be 12h at >1000lm if there's a power setting for that, because battery life tends to be longer at lower drain and emitter efficiency is higher at lower current. £250 here. If you really wanted to throw money at the problem, you might get more lm.h out of a given battery by adding more emitters, so double up on the lamp heads and run each at a lower setting to get more total light for a given battery drain.

See, I knew you had it in you. Cheers, that's cheaper than an Exposure. Never heard of them though. Know anything of their reliability?
-

Hmm.. the Openlight 17.4Ah is designed for bottle cages, which I don't have.

For +12h would it be worth getting a dyno hub? I know the SON's are expensive but might be an investment.
If it's for winter training, then the weight and additional friction shouldn't matter(?).

Best place for a bottle in aero terms is between your elbows

No dyno. This is for time trial.
Maybe not so good..

I'm thinking less cables = better too. My Dinotte cables suffered when I dropped the battery pack so I'm not keen to repeat.

Look at Ayup. Battery should be good for 12hrs on low, but they are small so you could carry two on your bars and switch.

I've emailed a friend of mine in Oz who used/uses Ayups for 24hr mtb enduro races.

I've got these and the Battery pouch on low setting (still bright enough for road use) will do 15 hours.
18 months of trouble free use here. They've taken a tad of a beating on my MTB and still going strong.
Money well spent.

I have used Lupine and Exposure lights for years, generally I get them at a reasonable discount from my LBS, keep them for just under a year and sell them on ebay, and upgrade to the next best model. I hardly lose any money doing this, and am now on an Exposure Six pack.
The low setting is perfectly OK for road use even at speed, and lasts 24 hours, the medium setting is more than enough off road, and lasts for 10 ish and the high provides more than enough illumination for any situation where you need a lot of light,
The real beauty though is having so much light on tap can make riding in the dark relatively relaxing. It is a bit of a lump though! -

1700lm from 6 x XP-G R5 suggests they're being run at >800mA (how much more depends on how many of the lamp lumens they manage to get out of the front of the housing to their "laboratory"), so 3.25V and 15.6W total lamp power, 4.5h at that is 70Wh. Battery capacity 14.8V x 5.2Ah = 77Wh. So, well done them for achieving a combined efficiency (driver circuit x optical design) of >91%, especially from such a tiny system. Of course, you can have 100% optical efficiency by just surface mounting the LED chips on the front of the housing, but that does mean that not much of your light gets thrown where you want it, as the beam shots show - the dispersion is basically the more or less uniform hemisphere of a bare chip

looking forward to testing it properly on monday
What was the verdict on this? I'm contemplating buying one.

not worth it.
Argh, I disagree, my rear one just stopped working all together for no apparent reason and the bracket on the front one snapped, apart from those issues they were very bright and lasted ages between charges.
