Things like specialist bike parts are way more expensive in Australia because of how the pricing works for distributors. Since the market is so small they can't get massive volume discounts like distributors can in Europe and North America, so things are way more expensive. This is not just for bike parts, goes for anything that's not a common consumer product.
I'm not saying shops don't overcharge, but that's only half the story.
