Sounds like the shin issue was just down to your legs needing to get used to running. Nice one. Thats not always the case with shins.
Man up, and duct tape them to your face......
....or get the hook-around-your-ear ones and run the cable down your back into a jersey pocket. I do this at the gym. Ever since I accidently flicked my Ipod at some 120kg polish weigtlifter.
I tend to turbo only wearing shorts.
