  • can you put the cable through that boss on the chainstay?

  • I am not a holdsworth nut, but I think that this is a special bike mostly because it seems to be
intact from the time that it was built (1970's) save for upgraded pedals, seat and bars. Is it as good as I think it is and what is it worth?

    Basic spec:
Reynolds 531 Holdsworth track frame (see the rear axel slot) with Campag rear end.

    c-c seat tube is 59cm.

    c-c top tube 58cm
    floor to bottom bracket 28cm
    floor to pedal 13cm

    Vittoria Georgia22 tyres
    Mavic MA2 rims
Mallard, France back hub, Normandy front hub
    Shimano pd-r540 pedals
    Rocket brand flip-flop rear sprocket (18 fixed/16free)
    Campag seat post
    Brookes swallow seat
SR Royal front crank (52 teeth)
    Sedis chain
    Universal front brake (mod 77)
    Nitto bull handlebar
    Cinelli Stem
Charge handle bar tape (needs replacing)

There is an old transfer on the stem that is partially legible reading 'Broadribbs Ltd, Market St,
Oxford's Bike Specialist.' This shop is still there, but has changed hands now.

Cheers, in process of swapping bars out for airwings, looks and rides a hell of alot better now, just need to fit the front brake (required to do TTs) and tape.... with the risers just felt way too short.

Does this leave you unable to ride it?

I've got enough bits n bobs to make up some sort of bracket for the indicator I reckon... if the boss on the rear of the chain stay is unusable as a mount? Might the boss become a usable boss with the slightly shortened axle you mentioned?

  • I reckon a 12-21t* 8 speed cassette would be fine on a TT set-up, any advice? paired with a 52/42 chainset.

Well, for normal (i.e. not SPOCO) courses, the old school rig was 1x6, 53 ring and a 13-18 freewheel. That's for ordinary people like me, riding 25 miles in the 58 minute area. The fast boys might have gone as high as 57 on the chainring with the less common 12-17 freewheel.

In the final analysis, though, who gives a fuck? The timekeeper measures how long it took you to cover the course, not how fast (or otherwise) you pedalled in the process, so just use whatever gives you the fastest times.
