  • possibly because it will draw attention to johnson's woeful record on road safety since becoming mayor?

  • Walking out highlights this woeful record more than discussing it constructively and thinking about solution. That's what leaders are elected to do aren't they?

  • Christ, they really are a bunch of shits, aren't they?

  • some great stuff on here- worth a repost readers

  • I also posted this in the news thread. About today's Assembly walk-outs, read the comments.

  • James Cleverly and Andrew Boff are pro-cycling, but there's a lot of politics being played with these issues. I personally think that the walkouts are appallingly bad strategy, and render the GLA even more unaccountable than it already is under the current system. I'm not quite sure what it is that they wish to achieve, but I have heard that they resent the use to which the other parties are putting the motion system. I don't understand the issues, though, perhaps someone more knowledgeable could explain.

  • those two may well be pro cycling as you say Oliver, however their actions do make one wonder whether they are pro cyclist.

Yes. They are pro one cyclist, and his name is Mr Johnson.

  • sweet! im allright then. screw the rest of you.

  • thanks for the info oliver.

No, that's not true. Andrew has been cycling for ages and he is a very genuine supporter of cycling. James is newer to it but cycles, too. I don't want to single out the Conservatives; there are probably fewer strong supporters of cycling there than in other parties, but they do exist. As for political manoeuvring and/or mud-throwing, what do you expect? The election campaign has well and truly begun.

  • I work in East London & see these wonderful 'Cycle super highways'. Only problem is that they are always empty. Many riders seem to prefer to take their chances on the road still. It seems to me that the more involved rider takes the road & the recreational user uses the highway. I ride a motor bike also & would love a lane just for powered bikes, bus lanes are better now but alas, not all can be used so care is needed to avoid points. Can a motion be put forward so that all bikes can use the Super Highways?

  • they already do. seen any asl's lately? nope me either - too full of continental dreamers.

  • I wrote to my assembly member, who is in the Conservative group, and the three Londonwide Conservative members about this. So far three of the four have replied to me, which pleases me, however the content of their responses don't.

I will be replying to them later, but as far as I can tell, not one of them has understood why petty politicking might upset cyclsts, or how much they look like idiots due to it.

I'm most amused by how none of them have so far explained to me how what they did was different to striking.

I also understand that this poor behavior (walking out to prevent meetings being quarum) has been going on at least once a week for some time now, so I'm going to put a bit more effort into investigating that, and, if true, trying to make it a bit more public. Especially in light of how much they are paid (54k per year), and some of their pronouncements on strikes.

  • loads of anti-cycling twuntery on that fat, servile fuck, nick ferrari's breakfast mong-in on LBC this morning. blame the victim culture in full effect. depressing.

  • meanwhile, itv encourages people to use phones whilst driving.

  • ITV London's report on the E&C protest was laughably inflammatory:

ITV News London - Wed 21 May 2014 - 6:30PM - Stop Killing Cyclists protest at Elephant and Castle - YouTube

they took a safety campaign and lied about it to demonise cyclists and claim they would block the roundabout.

That's only about 20 years behind TACs adverts.

Wishful thinking: I'd love it if most cars in London were actually full of people.

Do you also think violent computer games turn teenager boys into mass murderers? It could be a Euro car with the passenger taking the photo?

From the comments: "Report them to the Press Complaints Commission for sensationalist lying."

nice non sequitur there, sparky. i do however think that a national broadcaster encouraging people to indulge in demonstrably dangerous behavior whilst operating a ton of metal, albeit by proxy, goes a long way to normalising this sort of shit and frankly it can fuck off.

  • Sorry, I don't speak French. As for the second bit - how does it encourage this behaviour? I see lots of people on the news wearing high viz but I'm not rushing out for it.

Also, isn't it legal to use a mobile with the engine off? So, 1. might not actually be the driver and 2. the engine might be off, making the photo legal. Happy to be proved wrong on both though.
