I was having this very conversation via email with Chris Morris of Swrve yesterday- he said the following:

Having said that if i can get away with a cold wash and spin to get read of smell i do. Its the ***fabric softener ***that can really mess up water proof bit.

Don't use fabric softener. Nikwax makes it nice and waterproof again, mine is as new after two winters. It's also a very durable jacket, I've fallen on my elbow twice and not a scratch although there were massive grazes on my elbow and lower arm.
