I was having this very conversation via email with Chris Morris of Swrve yesterday- he said the following:
Yes i use http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/index.php to wash and then reproof .its the softshell stuff you need.
Having said that if i can get away with a cold wash and spin to get read of smell i do. Its the fabric softener that can really mess up water proof bit.
