I've had 5 pay rises in 6 years working for the same company which has seen my salary double since 2006 so that advice doesn't always hold true.
The best way I have found to increase my salary is a constant barrage of good PR. Document every success (above and beyond the standard stuff) and don't be afraid to sell it at every opportunity. Also, understand the role you play in making money for the company (direct or indirect) and, if possible, quantify the amount you have helped drive...
