  • All of those places are worth visiting. Not the best food in the world, but well worth the money.

Brick Lane is better food imho.

    There's a review here:

    http://www.quarrygirl.com/2010/06/26/vegan-field-report-vx-secret-societ-of-vegans-shop-in-london/

To my shame, I have to admit that I haven't been there yet, but that's also because I can fulfil all my vegan needs locally. :)

Likewise. I've been to the shop once, but its the wrong side of town for me, and generally when I'm over there, I dont have any sort of bag to carry purchases back south with me... feel a bit guilty, should be supporting them.

I presume people have tried the vegan cupcake place on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton? Their 'Ferrero Rocher' one is amazing... you wouldnt want to make too much of a habit of them though. Rich, sugary, teeth rotting madness. But so good...!!!

I have to admit that I've never liked Brick Lane as much. I know what you mean--it may well be better food, but I have a soft spot for the kind of cooking in Drummond Street.

Ms Cupcake was at the recent Vegan Festival, and as she'd nearly sold out I talked to her for a moment. Her stock went really quickly. It's a very useful antidote to people claiming you can't make vegan sweets. :)

I got Veganpeasant chocolate cake last Sunday (from Chatsworth Road Market) and it was absolutely delicious, as were the brownies. They lasted all of two days despite vows to myself that I'd be more disciplined. Adrian also gave me a slice of pumpkin cheesecake, which was wonderful. Gorgeous food. The world just needs to learn to bake vegan!

  • Where was this Vegan festival on?

I am disconnected in this end of vegan things, I dont proselytise for it or get involved with groups, etc.

  • Kensington Town Hall. There should also be a Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre there sometime.

Oh, I've just looked it up and it's tomorrow:

    http://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/NEWS/news_living//2521//

I probably have this information sitting around in an e-mail somewhere that I haven't looked at. Well worth going to. Always absolutely rammed, with gorgeous stuff on offer. Long food queues despite the fact that they're now up to five caterers (I think).

  • I'm not sure I can go. I might forgo the bike ride I had planned.

  • Hey I'm liking this posting about good vegan eateries! Brixton is on the opposite side of London to me so looks like those cupcakes will be a rare treat. And very annoyingly I work on Sundays so the markets and fairs are out. Goddamn because that cheesecake sounded good.
Thanks for the review link, I like quarrygirl's blog but thought she was just USA.
Are there any bike shops left in Brick Lane?

  • quarrygirl visits London quite often. I think her partner's from the UK. No bike shops in Brick Lane itself, but there's BLB around the corner in Bethnal Green Road.

  • I thought BLB had moved too, I don't know why.
Thanks, you're up on your info. I really want to do a vegan-friendly version of WUTM but I'm not sure I have the dedication to mornings to pull it off.

  • Most of the Indian food on Brick Lane is ghastly. I rarely see any Indians eating there, just drunk Brits and tourists.

I have seen plenty of Indian families eating at Diwana.

And people who don't know the dfference between Indian and Bangladeshi, darling?

  • An Indian ex girlfriend and her family would not eat on Brick Lane.

A lot of the food on Brick Lane claims to be Indian and features all the faux Indian dishes you expect in a curry house catering for the post 10 pints crowd.

  • Most call themselves curry houses rather than specifically Indian. There are a growing number of proper Bangladeshi cafés round there and some decent Pakistani places too. What I hate most is being relentlessly hassled as you walk up/down the street.

  • Vegan cream from 'Probios'.

    Best I've had so far!

  • Does anyone have any ideas/recipes for tofu? I have a huge tub of the stuff and want to do something a bit more exciting than bland tofu stir fry - thanks

  • Use it as a stuffing, e.g filo parcels with tofu, err, nuts, and spinach or something?

Or crumble it up and use it in a salad - I like using it that way with shredded cucumber, carrot, sprouted mung beans, add some lime, oil, spices...

  • Marinade it--ready-made sauces work well, or you could just use any old meat marinade recipe. Marinaded tofu can be delicious.

Anyone keen to go? Sounds like a forum drinks, only without gear inch fetishists. :)

  • if marinading tofu, it can be best to press the water out of it first to make it firmer

then it can absorb the marinade a little better

Yeah but you just get people comparing types of lentils instead.
That being said, I like lentils...
    Seems like fun.

  • I'm going. It seems like a good opportunity for catching up with the London vegan scene. I haven't really done that for years (e.g., haven't been to London Vegans for ages).

  • And lentils are great.

  • I'm very tempted by the drinks. Hmmm.

  • the flatmate's gf is vegan so sitting in our house is the vegan cupcake cookbook.
At the very least I'm making some green tea ones this week.

Great book. When I became vegan I missed cakes so much so I bought this book. When people taste them they can't believe they don't have cow milk or eggs.

    ...and red lentils rule!

That sounds pretty cool. Love the website name too!

Do it, Nhatt! Are you coming, too, Ewan?
