Surly hubs

  • Has anyone had any experience with them? I've fucked the bearings (sealed) in my front hub. I had problems with the cones continually coming loose. I kept on tightening them over a period of weeks until they gave up the ghost after a long ride. What surprised me was when I took the hubs appart there wasn't a spacer tube / shoulder on the axle between the the bearings, so when I'd been tightening the cones, the bearings had basically just been forced appart.

I'm going to make up my own spacer tube and should hopefully see more life out of my next set of bearings. What I was wandering was if these hubs were just badly designed or if I was missing a part.

  • My old ones seemed fine (only ran them for about 400 miles though) although mc_nebula is riding them now with no problems. I was always under the impression that they were decent hubs.

  • So was I. I haven't done much over 400 miles either.

  • My surley's (formally Moogs) seem fine at the moment, smooth as I would expect them to be... But, I have only done about 150 miles...

  • sealed bearing hubs don't usually have cones, thats what unsealed hubs use. I reckon you may have been tightening something you shouldnt off which has f'd the bearing

  • Yeh its a slightly funny design. 10mm axle with NO shoulders or spacer tube, 2 x bearings, 2 x cone nuts each side and 2 x bearing sheilds so they totally look like old school cup and cone hubs. Anyway your right, there kept on being a bit of a wobble with both the front and the back wheel so I just tightened up the nuts and this resulted in both front and back bearings dying.

I nipped down to B & Q at lunch and got some 14mm steel pipe (for the spacer) and got new bearing from a bearing shop for £7.50 each. Hopefully this will sort everything.

  • Its becasue they use angular contact bearing which you can apparently adjust just like cup and cones. One guy at work has had hsi for years with no problems mine came loose after just a few hours riding. Spoke to ison and they claimed I was the only person who had a problem ever. Just got some better quality bearings from a bearing shop and they now work fine.

  • What happened to me sounds exactly the same as you.

I changed the bearings and cut a tube spacer to fit between the bearings and put them all back together. Felt perfect when i went for a run last night, problem solved I hope.

  • Surly hubs are a piece of shit. But well marketed & over priced. I'd to change the bearings twice in 12 months a while back.

  • Our conversation at SE drinks in one sentance!

  • are you talking about the 135 spaced hub? as i;m just about to invest in one of these... what are my other options?

  • Goldtec.

  • I'll resurrect this thread for a minute.

Surly are over-priced and not good, right? I am trying to figure out what would be the best disc front hub. I am not willing to pay several hundred for a Chris King nor would I really want to go DT Swiss either. With those two bad boys ruled out, what would be the next best thing? Just get a Deore XT hub? I've understood even Halo might not be worth buying.

  • hope hubs are well respected

  • Thank you, james.

  • +1 Goldtec.

  • Goldtec seem like a good option too.

If I had the money, I think I'd choose Mack. "Thankfully" that is not an option.
