  • I have just finished my first conversion and was wondering if the chain line looked ok or whether i need to adjust the bottom bracket?

    thanks

  • looks ok too me

  • Looks.... ok..... but..... picture... making... me..... dizzy....

  • maybe im crazy but your chain looks a little loose?

  • Yep.. definitely crazy.

  • Listen to it! Good chainline= quiet (usually)

  • The best way to tell is to get a straight edge (steel rule, builders level) about 50cm long, take the chain off, run the straight edge along the front chainring as close to two adjacent crank spider arms as possible and see if it lines up with the sprocket - using this method with the Miche type BB (and much patience/use of crank puller/BB tool) you should be able to get it accurate to within fractions of a mm. That said, it looks pretty good so far, but could easily be +/- 1mm or more without being obvious. Like Rich said ^ your ears are a good guide too (assuming chainring, chain and sprocket are all in good nick, otherwise they will be noisy even if the chainline is spot on!).

  • Saddle looks loose also...

  • the teeth of your chainring seem to be pushed to oneside of your chain, this suggests your BB could do with moving inward ever so slightly.

Its hard to say wihtout being there though.

Follow retro di corsa's instructions to be more precise.

  • thanks everyone, will do some checks and change my seat over (the one on there is an old one from my commuter!)

  • If you want to do it properly just measure your chainline.

Of course this assumes your frame is not bent...

  • my chain is making some noise, I think coming from the back.. could the chainline alignment be the solution?

  • Chainline is cush.
Ignore noise till it just disappears.

  • I just noticed the rear sprocket (where most of the noise is coming from) is thicker than the chainring.. could this be a problem?

  • Answer your own question by taking the chain off the chain ring so its loose an checking that it fits onto the sprocket easily.

Can you give us any more information? Are both of the chain and cog new? Are they both the same pitch? does the noise occur all the time or is it just when your pedalling hard?

  • the chains fit's ok in the sprocket , but it fits better in the chainring.. it seems to have higher diameter concavities.

they are not new I guess, I bought the bike second hand, the chainring has some wear off, but still smooth, the sprocket seems to have less wear, but that's where the louder noise comes from.

How can I know the pitch of the sprocket? I doesn't have any labels on in..

It makes noise all the time, a bit more when pedaling hard. Also, it makes more noise if the chain tighter..

    thanks

  • take off sprocket, and face up to the main cog. or blue tack mould?!?
