Learn? What's to learn? DIY. Been done before.
Well, might soon have an empty garage at my disposal and have always wanted to learn to weld. Carbon fiber is a lil harder, but I would also like to try it. Might need to do some research into how viable that is, toughest part I reckon is working out proper matrix.
Hmmm... wonders of deep in thought -

^^The Lotus 108 is assymetrical too... The Lotus represents a Concorde moment for cycling(before the UCI discredited themselves by banning such machines) ...
Caveat what I'm about to say with the fact that I know almost nothing about racing.
Is it generally accepted that banning innovative machines was a bad move by the UCI? It's a problem in F1 (for example) that you simply can't make any meaningful comparison between Fangio's and Schumacher's accomplishments. Appreciate that, despite the banning of machines like the lotus, technology has moved in the past 20 - 30 years and that the bikes are utterly dissimilar, but I quite like the idea that people are at still competing in something that is recognisably the same sport and comparisons can be drawn (for example, hasn't the hour record only moved by a few hundred metres since Merckx's?)

Opinion varies, obviously, as some people would like to see the TdF contested on fixed wheel steel bikes with the riders carrying their own spare tubulars over their shoulders, but most thoughtful people agree with some elements of the aims of the UCI while denouncing the incompetence of the means.

Least we got the RAAM for that.
*only Jay Petervary managed a self-supported RAAM.

On the subject of "not my thing, but":
Bishop Bikes 650B Rando in the making...
I like Randonners, but Bishop often seem too fussy for my current tastes. However, the attention to detail and craftsmanship is outstanding. Not sure it's worth it, but it seems you do get what you pay for.
Funily enough it's actually a weightweenies' project. Click pics for linkz to flickr.

come to the Portuguese meal we're having on thursday
In the version I heard, Luc LeBlanc in 1993 had said he was unimpressed with Boardman's hour record and that half the peloton could have done the same.
After the 94 prologue Boardman was reminded of that quote and said "I suppose that shows which half of the peloton Luc LeBlanc is in"
Maybe too slick to be all true, but I always liked it anyhow....
