That article is a load of crap. The jist of it is there is nothing in my stream, so it has failed. No, your friends have failed to sign up or start using it. Yet. Social networks have a life cycle:
tumbleweed >>> early adopters >>> mainstreaming >>> critical mass >>> loose their edge >>> death >>> tumbleweed
You can't write one off when it's at stage 1 or 2.
I'm sure someone wrote an article on what a massive failure Android was before it was launched, now more people have Android phones than IOS phones. That article is incredibly naive.
I'm also sure someone wrote a similar article about Facebook once, saying something like "It will never replace Myspace, all of my friends on there are all the time"...
