it appears many different light designs suffer from the batteries becoming briefly disconnected when knocked.
with traditional torches this was not a problem as the switch was physically turned to the on position
but with modern torches that scroll through various settings the disconnection can result in the torch going off or changing mode
i have had a similar problem with an exposure flare light
