Cycle Hire Scheme Safety Video

Posted on
  • Here is a new cycle safety video from TfL

    http://www.youtube.com/embed/lwyTEs6hHdE

"Wherever possible try using designated cycle lanes"

Does try mean you should use them or consider their benefit before using them?

The bit about HGVs doesn't show the position you should take.

There is very little assertive positioning going on as well.

    Any other thoughts?

  • Is it aimed at 12 yr olds?

  • Yes, and you have to be 14 to use the scheme. Go figure.

I'm aghast at that right hand signal and then a move to the right with zero looking behind. And then a move back in to the left, with no look behind.

    Fail.

  • They also used an apostrophe to pluralise 'do'.

    Tut tut.

  • Telling us to use cycle lane that put them at even greater risk at fatalities? tut.

  • Don't you just love the way that the inconvenient truth of ASLs having Feeder cycle lanes ("use wherever possible") on the left has been airbrushed out of the cartoon.

Unbelievable they don't talk about and show riders looking back before maneouvering and the lack of taking the lane.

    And what a puerile video.

  • lol

  • Oh God, this is about as dire as anything I've seen, and that's saying something. Completely wrong in almost every aspect of planning and execution. Absolute and utter rubbish.

  • its not that bad is it?

For the people who need a video guide, the ability to take a dominant primary position is probably out of the question anyway because they are not confident/fast enough to make it work.

They clearly mentioned the risks of undertaking large vehicles. And showed how you should keep a "doors width" when passing parked cars .

    Seems appropriate to me.

  • The bit about HGVs doesn't show the position you should take.

That is the main problem with the video. But at least it shows that you shouldnt undertake the large vehicles, especially at corners.

During another part of the vid, it shows how to overtake/change lanes big signalling. Im guessing they are hoping watchers will use some initiative and either wait behind the large vehicle or go around on the right.

  • its not that bad is it?

    It is irredeemably shit.

Regardless of the signalling, don't you think it should show the cyclist looking behind when moving laterally across lanes.

And how about covering the brakes.

    And, and, and...

  • its not that bad is it?

    It's worse then that.

full of patronising scolding.... Remember to behave at red lights you naughty cyclists! Despite TFLs own report(suppresed) suggesting that cyclists who obay the rules at junctions strictly, are at higher risk from turning lories... TFL have cut the additional money for cycle training for Hire Hike users too.... They are an evil cabal whose members use ground up children to sweeten their coffee...

  • "Hire Hike"... a typo but a good one considering the amount of walking using the scheme usually entails.

  • TFLs own report(suppresed) suggesting that cyclists who obay the rules at junctions strictly, are at higher risk from turning lories....

    more info please?

  • thanks

  • an interesting read

They are still using the dread phrase "*86 per cent of the women cyclists killed in London between 1999 and 2004 **collided with a lorry" ***which tends to suggest the cyclist was the active cause of the incident. The lorry, it seems, never collides with the cyclist.

This assertion is not backed up by any actual evidence.

All just unproven speculation. Don't take it too seriously. Continue to spread the word that people shouldn't go down the left side of high-sided vehicles, whether they intend to jump a red or not. That's what counts.

this does my head in too- invisible meaning unnoticed in the wordstream but so distorting

  • Has anybody else noticed the web address given at the end? It's wrong:

    "tfl.gov.uk/barclayscyclehire.co.uk"

"tfl.gov.uk/barclayscyclehire" exists... at first I thought it was an "either-or", but "barclayscyclehire.co.uk" isn't there.

Further evidence that this wasn't made to a particularly high standard, which is a shame...
