I'm looking at spending around a grand, but as a first real bike I don't think this is practical enough really.
+1 to the other comments about dropping a grand on a first bike being a bit of a punt in the dark, unless you already know exactly what she's going to use it for, in what position and with what bars, all things which could change quite a bit over the first year of riding. Don't fall into the trap of building what you want!

Some new crepes for my daily run-about, omega 19s on phil low flange. Replaced the cranks for some campag c-record. Need a paint job or new frame next.
Very very nice! Excuse the possibly daft question, but if they are not C Record cranks which ones are they?
Oh, and the Cinelli Pista's I bought from you polished up pretty well, so thanks again!

Very astute point. I think that the most practical option is a Surly Cross Check. The aim is to use the bike around town, on some gentle weekend rides and potentially to take on holiday.
Any thoughts on the best value groupset to fit with this? New or second hand?

Just fitted drops to my Cinelli. Deda Rhm02 46cm, Thomson X4 120mm, Sram S500, Fizik tape. Also fitted my eBay special front light for those late night dark lane missions.

This should help: http://www.lfgss.com/thread74821.html
Still think overall a sub £250 second hand bike is the way to go while she works out what she wants, but hey-ho.

Like the Cinelli, must be a really nice ride.
I would go same colour stem and seatpost, the headset looks actually pretty cool (I would be tempted to go black or silver) and cut the steerer down a tad, so that only one spacer is a'top the stem.
But I actually think it is a real good looking build ^ and that is fairly uniform suggestion of all bikes, so maybe it looks better for it...

custom stem would look awesome with the cinelli, like this;

Holdsworth Triath-Elan.
Still a work in progress, as the STis don't work properly, so I have bought some 600 DT shifters and aero brakes to replace them and match the rest of the group. Also have some 600 aero pedals on the way.
Also intended and very much needed, but not financially viable at the minute, is replacing the mismatched wheels and tyres. A friend has a pair of Alex R500 rims with unbranded hubs that were stock on his Giant bike, and I might swap them as a stopgap as they match and are silver.
Not working aside, I'm delighted with the bike. I thought it would be a step up from my Peugeot Elite, but I didn't realise how much. -

Nice somec, what collor will it get. Too bad the old one is gone, Somec paintjobs are lust!
just simple white i think, unfortunately its not in fantastic condition, i got it for free of a mates dad, and he'd ruined the original paint repainting it yellow
invest in a nice classic campag groupset and a popper wild somec paintjob you wont regret it
if you want to pay for it then i will, lol. this is just a cheap run around till i find a track frame i want then ill either build it up as a roadie or sell it, as i already have another gear'd bike, and old peugeot perthus pro
