  • Just did 65km, up to Mount Lofty viewpoint, then down to Henley Beach, then back to where we started.

Had to do it on the clunky Rockhopper Comp that I borrowed, with fat off road tyres and all, but it was still a blast.

Bloody brilliant. The track up the mountain is cycling only and running alongside a freeway first, but then turns off and becomes calmer. Then downhill nearly no cars until at the very bottom. Side streets just to Torrens River, then around 15km cycle track to the beach, again no cars whatsoever. I had a great day.

Wish I'd have taken pictures as well.

  • Little update ...

The ride I mentioned above managed to make my knee hurt quite a bit. Two days later I went for the Superdrome taster session, and had the best half hour of my life, just until my knee started stinging like hell. Took me until today to get back on a bike. 2 hours ride today, mostly single track, and it was a blast.

All I can say is that Adelaide has a lot to offer for roadies and mtb riders alike, and I wish I had brought my new road bike.
The only hairy bit is cars. Due to the grid layout with main roads being 2 lanes either direction, people tend to give you less space than in London. The traffic flows faster, and on the Rockhopper I felt like I was too slow most of the time.
Roads up the hill, like Old Belair Road can be a bit hairy, there is little space and people feel they have to pass you by all means.
However, it mostly is possible to find traffic free routes if one is familiar with the grid and the good cyle/mtb dirt tracks up and down the hills.

Apart from that Adelaide is preparing for the Tour Down Under and it tells.
Saw some very pro looking people today riding past me like lightning, one guy in CSC kit, the other one in columbia team gear.

If the weather doesn't change, I pity those poor bastards. We had 41C today, and even though I set off this morning at 8am I felt like my brain was cooking 45 mins later.
We had cooler periods over the last 3 weeks, with perfect riding conditions around 22C, though, and I have the feeling it might change over the next few days.
All in all I am looking forward to a nice a crisp day around 0 - 10C when back in London for some reason. I guess that's called being homesick.

    Happy New Year everyone.

  • There's a certain novelty to riding in Oz but it gets boring quick if you don't have any hills.

  • Waited till today to do Lofty. Only about 26 degrees. Nice way to kick off the new year. Did it fixed which, on the way up, wasn't too painful on the body, but was on the lungs (probably still recovering from the holiday fun), and pretty fucking exciting on the way down! Span out a few times and was glad to have a front brake at some of the tight corners. Shedload of roadies about of course (freewheeling all the way down, the bastards). May give it a go on a road bike next time.

  • Oh, and ADL FTW!

  • ADL....heaps good?

i did gorge rd and then took a left on fox creek road....love that 1k climb!

its part of the tour this year

  • fox creek road....love that 1k climb!

Fox Creek Rd from the Cudlee Creek-Lobethal Road turnoff
    steeper than 2009 KOM

some might be looking for some of the terrain in Hippy's photo if they take Gorge Rd too fast

  • Just thinking about this. I am pretty sure I am much better climbing than I was back in December/January.
Would love to be back and give Mt Lofty a go on a proper road bike. Will bring mine next time we're down there, even though that might take another year or two.

Will make sure to catch up with you guys, if possible :)

  • So my now wife and I will be moving to Adelaide in December ... bike's coming with me.

  • Yay, visa approved! Definitely coming now.

  • Then training is in order for the TDU (this year with Eddy) and the Ride Like Crazy.
Last Sun we had a Tweed Ride, next month a H'erocia.
Adelaide Cyclists is a useful forum for a diverse range of cycling in Adelaide.

  • You should join www.fixed.org.au/forums.

    There's an Adelaide section...

  • I'm here ... haven't got a bike yet, though, so probably need an everyday bike (rack mounts and the likes) until my road bike arrives with the container freight ... any tips for which shops to go to?

  • Good luck!

  • Cheers man!

  • Treadly on Ebenezer Pl!

  • Radelaide.

  • Bought a Masi CX bike from Standish cycles on Henley Beach Rd. Really nice peeps in there.

  • Whow, the place I work at has the doors just unlocked, no reception, so anybody could walk in.
Pretty naive, from a London perspective. Will have to get used to people not trying to steal everything, being rude or telling me to fuck off all the time.

Commute's sweet, 10 - 15 mins on the bike. Drivers seem to be weirdly cautious here when turning as well. Two times now I waited and they because they expected me to pull past on the inside and I expected them to do what London drivers do best: Cut me off.

  • Anybody knows a good physio/chiropractor/osteopath in CBD that can help with back pain?
