  • I've been a bit bored this week so I decided to make something for my wall from some spare bits I had knocking about.

    I'm quite please with it

Spin the bars a little (perhaps bend them) and you have a great wall mounted bike rack

  • Finished this one yesterday.
    Ridley Oval

    wow, looks amazing (in love)

  • the best steel frame money can buy (in the price range £200 - £300)

    Oxymoron of he week :-)

  • Okay so this is my current fixie-which i was riding in London for about a year
I'm now studying at Leeds Uni and there are far to many hills to keep the bike this way

I want to put gears on the bike but keep it looking aesthetically clean
so i was thinking about just putting rear gears on and keep a single chainring at the front
I have only ever built fixie's and singlespeeds so not sure where to start

Just looking for some advice on what i need to buy and a rough cost of the transformation

    Thanks

    that obvious?

Rear wheel, cassette, chain, rear dérailleur, shift lever. I just put all that in the Chainreaction basket and applied voucher UK15 and it came to £128.95, or you could get nicer kit second hand. Your bike also needs a front brake and lever, but that's nothing to do with converting to geared. Might also need a chainring if you're running ⅛" at the moment.

  • or just HTFU... :P

  • About to start a new project for the GFs xmas present. I am looking for the best steel frame money can buy (in the price range £200 - £300), with geometry of 51 cm seat tube (c-t), and 53 cm top tube.

At the moment, the best option seems to be the Guerciotti record from Planet X, but I have also seen a Zanella frame in BLB that I could get for £250.

    What would anyone here recommend?

You could get something really special S/H for that price and respray it so it looks like new.. there was a good few small track bikes for around 300 quid or less a few months a go... I found an orbit track frame on here (or rather it was offered to me) for £120 and I think Hilary has a nice small frame atm... in fact he has.. a beauty.. PMing ya...

i've been cycling for two months with it how it is and its not really a pain
but i could go alot faster with gears

    jus' sayin'

Yeah - it was meant to be tongue in cheek. Still, any suggestions or directions on where to look?

  • Depends how much you love her...

I'm looking at spending around a grand, but as a first real bike I don't think this is practical enough really.

why not buy her a Claud Butler for £200 if its her first bike?

+1 for going second hand. I really wouldn't bother buying anything new for that price.

Its not the most femine bike, but its 853:

EDIT- In fact thinkig about it a little more, I would either get a second hand hybrid that is fairly modern and in good nick, then revamp (tyres, drive train etc), or get a nice classic ladies frame and restore /update there are are loads of nice ones on ebay at the moment.

IME having something easy to ride is the most important thing, so decent tyres, brakes, shifting, doesn't wiegh a ton, etc.

Also if it's her first bike, I'm not sure it's worth dropping a grand. Yes, you want something that's not so shit it'll turn her off, but like I said, decent wheels, gears and brakes.

EDIT EDIT: in fact there are tons of lovely send hand ladies bikes on eBay. There's even a nos motobecane for £150. Even if the paint jobs a bit tatty, just polish it up. Later when she s got a better idea of what she wants spend the money.

  • Only need some new wheels.

  • and finish off the foot retention?

  • Ah yes indeed. But I think I can arrange some nice NOS campa pedals, these come with new straps as well. :)

  • Pardon about the pedal , since my Gs pedal not arrived yet ...

  • Some new crepes for my daily run-about, omega 19s on phil low flange. Replaced the cranks for some campag c-record. Need a paint job or new frame next.

  • with thanks to jogger, finally found a silver post, so I'm close to happy. i want to get rid of these wheels and replace them with something with a box section rim and preferably (but unlikely) a set of hope ti glides. i decided put spuds for winter instead of look keos. pretty happy with it, not too sure about the saddle, its fine unless I'm not wearing padded shorts then its a bit uncomfortable over 5 miles, but that will be last most likely, wheels are now on the agenda.

can you tell me what model this is, i recently got a somec as a fixie project but dont know what model it is but looks similar to yours, heres some pics of mine for reference.

    cheers

  • Nice somec, what collor will it get. Too bad the old one is gone, Somec paintjobs are lust!
