Freshly ground coffee, clean machine, all set to go and........cue unpredictable spewing from the naked PF. Not a nice clean pour at all. Most of the online guides seem to indicate it's either grind, dose or tamp. Or all 3. Gah! Fucking coffee? How does it work?
Good tips in that H-B article, I would add that it's good to give the empty basket a wipe before dosing to make sure it's totally dry as moisture can give the water an easy route down the sides. Finer grinds and lower doses also give a much stronger puck to resist channelling. Obviously clumps in the ground coffee cause problems too, give your hand grinder a good shake before dosing, but that WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique - a typically grandiose H-B name for stirring coffee with a needle) thing you may have come across is a right dick about; best avoided.
