also i really don't want to race - too much risk involved (ego, damage to self or bike)

This. I've been to a few cat 4 races and was stunned by the level of even more aimless dick swinging there. I shudder to think what it is like in the other cats.

This is why I'm happy just to continually try to get faster by challenging my mates instead.
