In london they drop a nut down the shaft (as ski poles are tapered) then just pop a bolt through the bottom of the head up into it. Tighten for a it then voila, snug as a bug. I think i'll try this with one of the ski poles i'm watching on ebay, then the other try something new.
Stu - in your drawing, very little stress is on the bolt that stops rotation so a big pop rivet would probably do the job with less hassle.
matt - as si says, if you had some good alu pole you could tap a thread into the shaft base and then just screw a bolt through one side of the head into it as per your drawing. it would be easy to tighten it with a spanner.
