    yeah i drilled from one side to allow the shaft to go through the mallet head and then only slightly into the bottom, so the shaft sits in a small recess. Then the screw pulls it together. I've also got a tiny screw to stop rotation. Can i see a locating tab on your middle picture? If you had the join between the shaft and the bolt above the mallet head you could drill a small hole at 90**° **through both and put in another small bolt to stop it loosening over time. I'll do a shitty drawing now to try and explain
