I wouldn't worry too much about the length - Like you say, grind it down! I just google '9.5 bike axle' and Halfords do one for a tenner!

Sjs cycles have them, think I also spotted them in hallfords as mentioned aboved. Alot of cheaper hubs use 9.5 so theres still a need for replacment axles.
5mm extra each side, dont bother sawing/filing it off, it wont be an issue.

This isn't about a fixed gear or a single sPeed I'm afraid, but hopefully someone can help me.
Ive got an old touring bike with a snapped rear axle that needs replacing. I'm having trouble finding one though, I've asked in loads of shops but nobodyhas one. EBay shows me 165mm MTB axles, but will that fit? Or can I get 175mm and grind it down?
Is it even worth it I guess I could get a new wheel/ second hand (if anyone is selling)..
