RIP young lady too many tragic losses this year, government wake up how is allowing longer lorries on the road going to improve this

I would not be too quick to blame the drivers here. We don't know what happened yet. I think it's correct, though, to be very critical of the Mayor and TFL who knew all about the problems, and refused to make the junction safe by design because it might slow down traffic.

What horror! Stop killing cyclists!
-
• #31
Just spotted this in my news feed. Fucking hell. Is this still acceptable collateral damage when moving traffic through the city for TFL? It's outrageous.
RIP, poor girl.

So sad. RIP

Oh no. I hate reading the rider down thread. It's always lorries. R.I.P. My thoughts are with the riders loved ones.

A TfL spokesman said: "There has been an 18% fall in the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured on London's roads in the last decade, compared to the TfL's baseline figures from the mid to late 1990s."
Bollocks!
-

So as more people now start cycling on London's roads and nothing gets done to improve the safety of junctions like this, that percentage is going to continue to fall? Um.
This is incredibly horrible. Have been watching the LCC twitter feed updates on that London's Worst Junctions ride and all I can think is "why is that ride even necessary?" It shouldn't be, and it's heartbreaking.

Terrible stat, what are they basing the number of cyclists on? Too many questions, not enough answers. Lies, damn lies.
RIP cyclist

Still keeping my fingers crossed that one day someone in the offices that have the power to make vital change doesn't turn up to work because they too, have tasted the fruits of their lack of labour...under a truck.

Tom Edwards at BBC has examined the roundabout:

One of the comments is from Brian's wife [Petal]
I am the wife of Brian Dorling who was killed on 24th October at this awful junction. I and our 3 children are devastated by his needless death on what is an appalling layout. We went to watch the reconstruction of the collision and whilst I was watching the traffic in 20 minutes 3 more cyclists were nearly hit. I said to the police and traffic engineer at the time that someone else will die. -

This has been getting a lot of coverage on London news programs today, as has the dangerous junctions ride. It seems that maybe now people are starting to take note.

multigrooves, we shouldn't wish that on anyone. most of these people just don't get it, rather than being actively malicious. we need to educate them, that's the main thing.

thoughts and prayers for the rider, her family and friends.
yes i just saw the report the news.
i will write to my mp again.
i urge others to do the same.

I'm going to write to my MP too and also write to Boris, FWIW. Just feel that it's time for Boris to stop the rhetoric and take this seriously, or step aside and let somebody take over else who can do it.

Deep down I don't mean it but do you really think if Boris' daughter met her fate this way change would be so bloody slow? Just listen to him in that Assembly meeting not answering questions. I can understand if you don't cycle but Boris does! What do you mean when you say he needs educating?
Also when these people pay huge sums for independent reports on on roads and then choose to bury/ignore them, they are allowing it's citizen to actively die maliciously IMO.

Here is a report on the death of the cyclist concerned as well as the cycle protest in regards.

Another comment from Brian's wife in that thread:
Brian was an extremely competent cyclist and motorcyclist, he taught me to motorcycle and was always very particular about road positioning he would not put himself in a dangerous position. The painted blue strip directs cycles into it with a perception of protection but takes them across a left hand turn. These superhighways are not even in the highway code, drivers do not know how to use them.

Horrible news - RIP cyclist.
But it is reassuring that tfl have some lies to make us all feel better about our own safety.
On the same bit of 'cycling lane' that a fella got killed on a few weeks back - AGAIN by a reckless HGV!
