Replacing cartridge bearing

  • I've got throbbing fingers, one lot of bearings off one side of each axle and seized locknuts one one side of each axle.
    Any clue how to un-seize?

  • Luci - Any update on this?

  • ^ No luck as yet - I'm taking the seized axles to our maintenance department to have a crack at them. They're the only people in the factory who knows about the blog, they're good lads.

  • Hey presto - the engineer whacks them in a vice, tightens the fuck out of it, attacks it with a large 17mm spanner, and they're free! Does the same with the other axle and I'm pleased as punch.

    All done in 7 minutes.

    Ace.

So it's new bearings being fitted tomorrow morning before work, everything getting a really good scouring with fine wire wool and a liberal dollop of grease.

    I'll keep you posted!

  • I can highly recommend the method of placing a large washer between both sets of new bearings and track nuts, and careful tightening of the nuts to bed the bearings.
This was probably the most successful piece of spannering I've ever done - went so smoothly and easily!
Now these once grinding gritty wheels run like butter, so sweet. I'll make a habit of loosening of all the bolts every few months and giving them a quick greasing. That way the servicing/bearing replacement should be a doddle.

I really need to sort out a good workbench and vice though...

  • It's important to have vices Luci.

  • i wouldn't know about that, mate.

Pure as the driven snow, that's me!
