Blimey, thanks to all for the comments and advice.
I have had one unsuccessful attempt via police, but will take a deep breath and try again. Been putting off the A&E route, but should get on that too. The frame number is a great idea, altho I fear the frame is old.
ps888: my (very uninformed) diagnosis would suggest a shoulder injury, so that fits your friend's sling
punkture: agree with your advice re. potential claimants. I am trying to be a bit vague about the bike.
