I got warned about spilt oil on the road ahead by a police yesterday. She probably spent the rest of the day kettling students, but it was a bit of good.
Dunno if they still do it, but the Dr Bike things used to give out free (free!) lights. Perfectly good emergency lights. Even in summer I carry a pair around as pub lights for that visit that lasts a couple of pints longer than you expect.
