New wheel for 126mm dropout

  • Hey

I know there's been a bit about this in the past but here's my situation:

Acquired a Raleigh Sirocco but the wheels are knacked. 6-speed cassette is fine. Need new wheels.

Rear dropout is 126mm, most wheels are 130mm but designed for 8/9/10 speed. Has anyone ever tried anything like the Ribble on here? http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15663289

I'm not gonna be able to do that with my width. Don't fancy redishing with a 120mm hub cos i'm a fatty...

Any suggestions? Forgive my obvious ignorance, this is my first project...

  • Use a 130mm wheel. Bend frame a little when putting wheel in. Heavier guage tubesets (531 or 'lower' down the foodchain) can be sprung like this. It's only 2mm each side.

I would imagine you'd be better off buying a wheel for a screw on block, 7speed.

  • Velo Orange make such thing, 126mm spacing with screw-on freewheel.

But as Skully said, don't worry, it's only 2mm difference on both side

  • Sweet. Not wanting to spend much so thought a pair of these would suffice http://www.parkersofbolton.co.uk/p-1848-700c-weinmann-front-and-rear-cassette-race-wheels-qr.aspx

Presuming just whack some washers in to space it adequately...

  • those Velo Orange wheels look pretty tidy, a bit too tidy for this particular rebuild! I dare say once this bike's built i'll be starting another though...

  • I recently cold set a frame to 130 from 126 following the instructions from Sheldon Brown's site. It worked a treat and the wheel fits properly now rather than having to squeeze it in and out

  • An 8 speed hubset can fit on a 126mm spcing .
Freewheel models do as I got one now.

    7 and 8 speed.

    S/F,
    CEYA!
