On the steel merckx/lightweight build: I don't think it's as much as a fail as everyones making out.
IMO a set of 1" carbon forks, or even better - just changing the fork steerer to ahead/threadless coupled with a tasteful retro ahead stem, followed by a less ugly seatpost and saddle combo would look awesome.
