I tried the crank on the existing BB (115 shimano UN 54) and got a 42mm chainline and it's not too close to the frame.
So will get a UN 55 replacement with the non-plastic cups. Thanks for the help.

just fitted a 49d single with a UN 54 113 and it looks fine except i'm a bit worried as the plastic cup didn't go all the way in.

can you send a close up top down picture of the drive side? cheers

should the plastic cup be on the drive side?

No

Don't assume that because his works with a 113 yours will - your crank tapers may be more worn, or just at the other end of the tolerance band.

thanks tester
worried the ridge on the plastic cup should go in flush to the bb shell
(apolloxl, drive side pic coming)

do you need closer up?

In an ideal world it would, but as long as it's providing proper radial support to the cartridge it doesn't matter that you seem to have run out of clean threads. The trouble usually arises because loose ball BB cups are typically thinner than cartridge BB cups, so the BB shell threads on older frames were only chased to the depth required by the older kit.

great, nice recommendation on the bb, i'll see how it rides

no thanks, i'm quite sure I need a 115..
although is there a risk of going too wide and throwing the chainline out? i.e. the chaninring being too far out and the chain hitting the cog at a bad angle.HillyBen's looks to be slightly wide too

it could be

it could be
115 in the post! can't wait. hillyben have you chained it up yet? how does it ride?

• #40

• #41
are those mks pedals? no kick-spike-thingy..
-
• #42
no, lyotard, probably 70's. no kick spike but nice feature is the raised point to protect against crank rub.
