    It's a mtb with a triple .

I am unsure about what bb and cranks.

  • Hollowteck 2 FTW...

  • Amar - No, they don't look like that as that is an RD2 single / messenger chainset (I have those on my Plug). This is a TRIPLE crank, essentially the same arms but the spider is for 3 chainrings. You could use them with just a single ring but that's not what they are for. I'd also agree with the comments that they are longer than most people would want for a fixie unless you happen to be very tall.

They are however fine for an MTB / Hybrid / touring build. They came off my old Sirus which has now been split and which some other bits will be being sold over the next couple of weeks.

If you're after a set Messenger cranks then I might be splitting the plug I have at some point but I need to know I'd make a decent return on the whole lot to justify it. That's why I asked in the same post what they are going for nowadays.

  • big up levy

Nuke the fcuking place. Just make sure I'm out on my bike when you do it.

Having just built an MTB myself (and at risk of loosing a sale) check out the prices on Rose Bikes, the Deore chainset and BB is a steal, but I am noticing the higher Q factor of the external bearings over traditional square taper. You could use the cranks I'm selling with a £12 UN52 cartridge BB and then get rings to suit the ratios you want.

I went 22, 32, 44 with a 11-28 block and personally feel that 22,36 with a bashring is where the promised land is. When my middle ring goes I'll probably make the move that way.

I think I should have made myself clearer it currently has a triple but I want to convert to single speed or fixed ...

  • oh, if its for a mtb then get mtb cranks, they have a larger q-factor so they will have the clearance needed. you could use the sugino cranks with a rather long bottom bracket, but would lose stifness and I dont think the chainlines would be correct. I prefer square taper with mtb cranks as you can vary the axel length to get a better fit, I dont like big qfactor, you do lose stifness over external. stay way clear of isis and octalink.

  • stay way clear of isis and octalink.

    Why?

  • Why?

If you get Isis or octalink it limits your options in future, much better to stick with square taper..

Also I don't much like the idea of those tiny splines.

  • From an engineering perspective, the splines are better than a square taper because there's a lot more metal at the interface. Most of the flat faces on a square taper won't be contributing at all.

You can get a decent bottom bracket for £20 and if you change systems you can still sell the old one.

The growing market is external brearing systems which I see as being far superior to systems where both cranks have to be removable.

  • never had a problem with isis

  • I know you are both right, it is probably a better interface, I just am stuck in my ways.. plus sg75 don't come in splined ;)

  • Get some proper cranks :-p

  • isis and octalink BBs tend to be more expensive, the bearings usually wear much faster, less readily avalible than square taper, is the extra price and problems worth a tiny amount of extra power transfer? a google search and you'll find pleanty of other problems people have found, its the reason squared tapers still here after many years and they are not. external bearing are usually excellent though, but you cant vary the q factor. I'd only use external BB or perhaps the Dura Ace 7710 on my fixed gear though. sugino 75s arnt even that good. I love the stronglight activ link track chainset I have, shame they arn't 144BCD though.
    Just get shaft driven.

  • I got a deore chainset complete with BB for £43 from Rose. You get about 4mm of movement for the chainline via the spacers. The BB on it's own is only £20 with cups, less if you just get the bearings.

Most of the issues you read about are muppets that put to much tension into them or not enough. Hollowtech needs to be snug and slightly resistive (bit like a needle bearing headset). The other issue is people not getting their BB faced before they fit them. Because they depend on the face of the BB and not the cartridge to ensure the cups are parallel it's way more important to get this done. Install them correctly and they work just fine.

  • Anyone got a 27" rear wheel going spare?

  • What are the opinions on pressfit bb?

    i found this

    singlespeed MTB -
52 mm Wider chainline need for chainstay clearance on MTBs. This is close to the chainline of the outer ring of a typical MTB triple

    Singlespeed MTB Alternate -

47.5 mm White Industries ENO hubs use this chainline, which lines up with the middle position of a typical MTB triple.
It's also fairly close to the outer position of a typical "road" double.

  • WANTED: 700c front wheel. Needn't be anything fancy.

    Ta chaps.

I can do you the old front wheel from my Sirus Elite (Alex Rim 32h on Specialised hub inc QR) for the princely sum of £4. The hub needs repacking and might need new bb's but it worked OK last time I rode it. You would have to collect though. Let me know as I'd need to pick it up from my mates house.

Also have the back wheel (Mavic A319 on Specialised 130mm non sealed hub inc QR). The hub need attention as above and the freehub while working really could probably do with replacement but the rim is fcuking solid as a solid thing and would be sound for polo. If anybody wants it it's yours for £5. The rim alone is well worth that. Note that you would not want to run anything below a 28mm tyre on it though, it's very happy at 32mm up.

Ammar - I really want to shift these bits to make room so I'm prepared to do the cranks I have for you at £4. I honestly don't think you would have any issues with a sensible length BB.

Call it the "I've not got enough cash for a packet of fags / Housing benefit cock up sale"
