I got a deore chainset complete with BB for £43 from Rose. You get about 4mm of movement for the chainline via the spacers. The BB on it's own is only £20 with cups, less if you just get the bearings.
Most of the issues you read about are muppets that put to much tension into them or not enough. Hollowtech needs to be snug and slightly resistive (bit like a needle bearing headset). The other issue is people not getting their BB faced before they fit them. Because they depend on the face of the BB and not the cartridge to ensure the cups are parallel it's way more important to get this done. Install them correctly and they work just fine.
