Having just built an MTB myself (and at risk of loosing a sale) check out the prices on Rose Bikes, the Deore chainset and BB is a steal, but I am noticing the higher Q factor of the external bearings over traditional square taper. You could use the cranks I'm selling with a £12 UN52 cartridge BB and then get rings to suit the ratios you want.
I went 22, 32, 44 with a 11-28 block and personally feel that 22,36 with a bashring is where the promised land is. When my middle ring goes I'll probably make the move that way.
