Philistine act on a 1930's race frame

Posted on
  • I'm fairly serious about putting a hacksaw to a 1930's Carlton racing frame, but before commiting this potentially philistine act wondered whether anyone had any brighter ideas or relevant mechanical knowledge.
The frame has an integrated headset (retrofuturism!!) on a 1" threaded steerer but the headset is incomplete - I've got the upper race, steerer clamp and lock-nut, but not the crown race.
The main problem here is that there's a ding in the lower headtube cup

Assuming I can't get rid of this ding by "panel beating" my plan had been to trim off the lower cup with a hacksaw or dremel and fit a new 1" lower headset race
I'll try and salvage the upper, but the top cup is in a bit of a state, so failing that will do the same on the top...

As you can see from the pictures this frame leaves much to be desired - the plan is to have it ready in time for next years eroica. I don't really relish the idea of chopping off a 1930's integrated headset and am ready to listen to any alternative approach!!!

  • You could probably find a cartridge bearing to fit the space. The hardest bit would be getting a crown race and an upper race to fit.

  • Cheers oz. that sounds worth trying - I've got an old M:Part cartridge 1" Ahead in my shed that would do as a donor - I'll give it a go and report back on my findings!

  • I just had to buy one of these style headsets from Ebay. Not cheap, but I´d look into it before doing anything like cutting that frame. Come to think of it, my frame had some regular cups in it when I got it. They were just about long enough to be fitted into the frame, without chopping anything. It´ll just raise the front of the frame a few millimeters.

  • Just found this, which may help you out...scroll down....

Wish I´d known about it before I spent a lot of money on evilbay.

  • Nice one James D - perfect....
No chance of the hacksaw being deployed now!!!

  • Quick update on the Tandem Club offering - may be of interest to anyone in the market for Brampton integrated headsets - I had a sudden recollection of seeing an old Claud Butler shortwheelbase track tandem from the '30's sporting a 1.125" integrated headset - I contacted the tandem club and received this response....
"Our bearing races are (1.125") as you quote. We do not have any 1” Our stock was manufactured many years ago by Longstaff cycles who, at that time had a large engineering work shop.....
    Back to the drawing board!
