For Sale: 55x55 hand made Chas Roberts racing bike

Posted on
  • Hi,

I am reluctantly selling my beloved Roberts road bike due to lack of space and money. The frame was hand made by frame-making legend Chas Roberts whose bikes have gone on to win two professional World Championships. Here’s a link to his web page: http://www.robertscycles.com/. I believe that the frame dates back to the 1980s, and according to the person I bought it from, the bike belonged to one of two cycling sisters who represented GB internationally. Apparently this very bike was used to earn her first place at the British national championships.

Unfortunately, I do not know what material this frame was built from, however I have little doubt that Chas used top-end Columbus or Reynolds tubing. This definitely shows by the frame’s weight and stiffness. The frame has a few scuffs and chips here and there and has been touched up with a little paint in places, however, this is only apparent on closer inspection. According to the Roberts website, a new racing frame like this with a steel fork would set you back around £1400!

The frame's top tube and seat tube both measure 55cm. The frame is built up with Shimano 600 7-speed indexed shifters, Shimano 105 rear and front derailleurs, Shimano 105 brake calipers, a Campagnolo GS chainset, Mavic Open 4 CD rims built with a Campagnolo Record front hub and a Shimano LX rear hub and DT Swiss Competition spokes.

Please note that the bike will not come with the pictured seatpost and saddle, as the bolt on the seat post is threaded and my bum is too fond of the saddle to see it go. I will however replace these with a different silver seatpost and a black Selle San Marco saddle.

I am looking to get £390 for the whole bike.

The bike will be available for collection after 8pm outside of Highgate station on weekdays.

    Cheers,
    Peter

  • Price drop!

  • Lovely, if only I had the moneys! good luck with the sale

  • Thanks xanderh

  • Very nice, but I suspect too small for me - is the seat tube 55cm centre to centre or centre to top?

  • I would say it's around 54 to 54.5 c-t-c.

  • Lovely bike.
    Wrong size for me :-(
    Good luck with the sale

  • lovely bike, too short =(

  • thank goodness it is too small!

  • Could you not contact Roberts with the frame number to find out what tubing was used to build it?

  • Yeah, I was thinking about doing that actually. I'm doubtful of how likely they are to tell me though as it's probably logged in some very old book somewhere. If anyone feels like checking though, the serial number is 821010. Hmm, maybe I'll actually give them a bell myself tomorrow if I get some time.

  • This frame is win win win...

  • I spoke with Roberts Cycles today, but they said that their records kept at the shop don't stretch back far enough to check, or I botched up the frame number. I was however told to ring tomorrow to speak with the man himself, Chas, as apparently he will remember, especially if the frame was built for a serious athlete. So, to be continued...

  • "Phone 01 - ..." Ha! That's one way to date a frame. An old clubmate of mine had a very similar 80s Roberts, probably the same shade of blue. Lovely bike, might be interested if I didn't have a similar vintage Ron Cooper. ;-)

  • Best bike on here by a country mile....if i had the money...have this straightaway....whoever buys this will be one lucky blighter!

  • Roberts are always the way forward.

  • Lovely bike.

  • That's tasty - wish I had the cash.

  • roberts had a fire years ago that destroyed their records,my roberts frame number is 778.its got the same headtube badge as yours with the old address and phone number.another forumenger loafheads on here told me its build date was either august 77 or july 78

Funny that i had a Joe Waugh frame and called M Steel Cycles in Newcastle and they said all their records were destroyed by a fire years ago.....is there a pattern here?
