I'm fairly serious about putting a hacksaw to a 1930's Carlton racing frame, but before commiting this potentially philistine act wondered whether anyone had any brighter ideas or relevant mechanical knowledge.
The frame has an integrated headset (retrofuturism!!) on a 1" threaded steerer but the headset is incomplete - I've got the upper race, steerer clamp and lock-nut, but not the crown race.
The main problem here is that there's a ding in the lower headtube cup
Assuming I can't get rid of this ding by "panel beating" my plan had been to trim off the lower cup with a hacksaw or dremel and fit a new 1" lower headset race
I'll try and salvage the upper, but the top cup is in a bit of a state, so failing that will do the same on the top...
As you can see from the pictures this frame leaves much to be desired - the plan is to have it ready in time for next years eroica. I don't really relish the idea of chopping off a 1930's integrated headset and am ready to listen to any alternative approach!!!
