  • Holiday reading demands The Collected Works of Jackie Collins, Vol. 4 - Crayons and Early Learning Centre Exploits.

  • Ooh, where you off on your jollies, Brave?

  • the whole book is on amazon, under 'look inside'. Is that intentional?

    not when i looked, which is a shame cause i'd like to read it

  • buy it maybe?

  • that's a possibility, will check the library first before i do anything rash like spending money

    have recently read 'The Spirit Level' which is on a similar theme and next is 'Injustice - why social inequality persists'

  • My mate's book came out earlier this year, and garnered quite a bit of coverage. I have now read it, and can recommend if you are interested in a leftist view of British politics and its impact on the working class from Thatcher to the present day:

    Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class: Amazon.co.uk: Owen Jones: Books

    I haven't seen it, as I'm having trouble keeping up with the Joneses.

  • Ooh, where you off on your jollies, Brave?

    Turkey. Too weeks in a Villa by the coast in Kalkan.

  • My best mate wrote this, all set in Brixton... Completely mental read, Robert Anton Wilson meets Walter Mosely meets Jake Arnott...

  • Turkey. Too weeks in a Villa by the coast in Kalkan.

    Very nice!

  • i thought this book was awesome;

    Best read in a long time.

    Also his other book, the corrections was pretty good.

  • Beautiful.

    Almost finished with this. It's a fantastic read

    Just bought Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Thought cold war could be a good follow up on burning forests

  • Just finished this:

    [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Them-Adventures-Extremists-Jon-Ronson/dp/0330375466"]Them: Adventures with Extremists: Amazon.co.uk: Jon Ronson: Books[/ame]

    Still reading this:

    [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Search-Lost-Time-Vol-Classics/dp/009936221X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319038015&sr=1-3"]In Search Of Lost Time Vol 1: Swann's Way: Swann's Way Vol 1 Vintage Classics: Amazon.co.uk: Marcel Proust, Scott Moncrieff, Terence Kilmartin, D J Enright: Books[/ame]

    Dipping into these two, both of which are excellent:

    [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scattering-Christopher-Reid/dp/0955455367"]A Scattering: Amazon.co.uk: Christopher Reid: Books[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Human-Chain-Seamus-Heaney/dp/0571275559/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319038233&sr=1-6"]Human Chain: Amazon.co.uk: Seamus Heaney: Books[/ame]

  • Just started reading "Game of Thrones". They're on sale in Waterstones so thought I'd give it a read. Not really one for fantasy, usually a classic crime novel reader, but I'm finding it really gripping. Only about 10 chapters in (and it's a thicken!). Really recaptured my joy for reading. It's a great feeling all to easily forgotten when you put a book down after finishing it.

    Anyway, I think there are four or five more books after this so should keep me busy over the winter months!

  • Casino Royale.

    Actually contains the phrase 'the sweet tang of rape', and is massively sexist.

  • By him of 'Kitchen Confidential' fame. Not a patch on that, but then not much is.

    Can't think of anything to say about this, largely due to it being incomprehensible. He's arguing about something, not sure what.

  • For Whom the Bell Tolls.
    So good. Never felt so immersed in a story before.
    However the version I'm reading (the one below with the Hogarth cover) has all the rude words swapped for 'obscenity'. It's not on. Totally messes with the flow when you have to work which profanity was used.

  • Just about to start reading sabre squadron by Cameron Spence

  • 1/3 of the way through this gem

  • Presumably you know of Desolation Angels? Kerouac doing his thing up a mountain, alone at a fire-lookout. Probably my favorite of his

    Desolation Angels: Modern Classic (Paladin Books): Amazon.co.uk: Jack Kerouac: Books

    Love Desolation Angels - Fire Season looks good, cheers

  • unable to tear myself away from the pages.... It's Incredible.

    The Magus: Amazon.co.uk: John Fowles: Books

    Pretty much how I'm feeling. I'm going to read the Julian Barnes book next as a friend gave me a copy. Then need to think of a couple more for christmas list.

    on the non-fiction front Im taking a break from the Black Swan and starting The Snowball - warren buffet and Oil by M.Yeomans.

    I got the audiobook. Have to say I was a little disappointed - not that many laugh out loud moments. Coogan seems to have adopted a more 'reflective' Partridge voice for the audio which I'm not sure works - kind of like he was going through the motions. Having said that the moments that truly did make me laugh made me spit my coffee out.

    I just finished 'Wolf Hall'. Absolutely fantastic book - totally captures Thomas Cromwell as a political animal. Superbly written, really endowing Cromwell with a moral core and estabilshing a very vivid sense of the duality of ruthless ambition set against a humanist nature. Would recommend to anyone interested in politics, history, religion or just a great read. I'd been reading the CJ Sansom 'Shardlake' books so this tied in nicely.

    I'm now returning to 'Infinite Jest' by David Foster Wallace to see if I can get more into it this time round. I've got a feeling that I need to be able to read it with less distractions though.

  • I've been trying to read Infinite Jest for months now, it's such a hard book to stick with if you've only got 2 hours a day to dedicate to it. An incredible piece of work though, 'Brief Interviews with Hideous Men' would be a good option for those more prone to reading shorter works.

    Yes - completely agree. I feel like I need to read it in really large continuous chunks to let it sink in. I'll download 'Brief Interviews with Hideous Men' to the Kindle though so thanks for the tip off!
