I did my first audax on Saturday. 200k from Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. With gears.
Being the longest ride I've done this year (and something of an experiment) we took it really slow, probably averaging 15 mph for most of it and slowly wound it up as time when on. I got really apprehensive on friday, so was running on only 1 hours sleep!
Despite a bit of tiredness the windy 140 miles (door to door) were surprisingly comfortable. I ate heaps of food and kept my bottle refilled which I'm sure was crucial. We had a chat on the bike with a fella who'd recently ridden a 1200k event in Bulgaria!
