Which wheels? Low budget campy-mavic-custom

Posted on
  • hi, i need to get one new set of road wheels for campagnolo casette.
here and in my budget i have three option:

mavic aksium: 1800g, 20 spokes both wheels, clincher

custom wheels: tubular box section wheels 24-28 holes, formula hubs, dt spokes, rims sun vista cruiser tubular 385g x2, total weight 1690g

campagnolo khamsin: 1873g, 20-27 spokes, clincher

will be used for traning and local races, im 71kg, the campagnolo cost a 50% more than the other option so only will considereted if they are relly superior to the other option.

im relly tempted for the tubular wheels, for the weight, especially the 385g in the rims, i suspect the campagnolo and mavic clincher rims must weight a lote more. the tubular thing, i never have used tubular, but in this case will be used with training tubulars, nothing fancy super lite....
but im conserned about the aerodinamic of the tubular wheels, this are box section wide rims, and in the last time aerodinamics apper to be the most important factor in cycling.

whish one you choose and why? is a bad idea use tubular for training?

  • it is suggested elsewhere that sun vista cruisers are better suited to the wider tyres found in the cyclo-cross discipline

  • so wich one you choose?

  • I'm no expert in CX wheels, but there dosent seem to be any contest to me. If you are OK with putting a little extra time into running tubulars, then go with the custom. A tubular tyre will often weigh slightly more than a similar clincher + tube combo. But this is compensated for many times over by reduced rim weight. Also as Rive Gauche points out the extra width of the rim is another advantage. Wider rims (by witch I mean approaching the width of the tyre to be used) give a better tyre profile, and thus better rolling characteristics. It will also reduce snakebit style punctures. I would'nt hesitate to pay a weight penalty for some extra width on a MTB rim. I imagine CX is similar.

At 71Kg, all the spoke counts would be fine. I'd argue that 24/28 will give you more chance of finishing a race if one spoke snaps. But I cant imagine the difference being that big.

I've also used that EBay shop in the past, and had good service.

  • wheel and sprocket also do a cxp22 rimmed road wheel, this may better suit your road needs

  • Why did I think he/she wanted CX wheels?

    Must learn to read.

    Grab some PX model B's

    Or the popular Mavic Aksium.

Personally I'd go with the Model B's.

  • maybe i dont express well, my native languege is spanish.

those planet x looks great but the mavic are in the store right now....

Your post is fine. I misread the reply from rive gauche.

The Mavics are a solid chioce at that price range.

  • and just to add more choice (uncertainty), fulcrum racing 7 are fairly well regarded and within your price.

  • just by the mavic aksiukm, they were very cheap aprox $220 US dollars (here in south america every thing is overpriced), normally cost $400 US dollars, they looks fugly..... especially in my bike (lugged steel) but the price was too good... and think chanche the bike soon..

  • just to resurrect this then, the model Bs are on sell for £120, should I buy them, the aksiums or the khamsins? All similar prices...

    All advice appreciated.

  • I have the model b's and i think they are great. really good value for money

  • Which ever one is easiest to get replacement spokes for. I wouldn't buy Fulcrum 5s again for instance, too much of a faff getting replacement spokes for it

  • Ah Xander I was wondering if you did, I read a few reviews saying that the freehub body is made of soft cheese and the cassette can chew it up, but I guess its early days for you...?

you will get a better deal, lighter, stronger through buying hand built. compare prices with others. tom is a friend of mine, but i can vouch for them, i have a set of cx wheels from him, very strong and light indeed. he builds very good wheels.

  • A decent, light, sealed cartridge and hand built wheelset for £120? Show me!

  • personally i'd go askium, have 4pair ,weigh 90 kg, ride 3rd world country roads, never had issues, using them since 2005.. wamc
