I am pretty ignorant of the technical side and also much of the history of forums, but it seems there is a great deal of value in this direction, in many ways looking back to our early internet interactions, when it was exciting because you hooked up with people over content and interests - and totally shifting away from the real-identity facebook/googleplus, everyone you already know who already know each other, thing.
