Wicksie - I got some Icebreaker longsleeved merino baselayers for half price last week from tauntonleisure.com. They had 260 merino base layers for about £35 - and some 200 for £26. Also got a little reversible merino beanie for £9 that will fit under a helmet.
Admittedly it's not cycle specific and it's fine merino rather than uber-thick stuff but I wore my 200 one all week and was toasty. They are long enough on me not to ride up - I'm 5'3 and it comes down to cover the bum.
