Offered: Custom wheels builds

  • I am a mechanic and wheel builder at an independent central London bike shop. I am looking for some extra beer money at the moment so thought to offer my wheelbuilding skills freelance.

I can order whatever rim and/or hub you want and will sell them to you at less then retail.

I will now charge 20 pounds labour per wheel I build (like I said, beer money)...

I am happy and experienced in building any spoke pattern you like, regardless of whether its snowflake, radial etc

I am also able to tie and solder wheels.

I will warranty the first 30 wheels I build for a year.

Contact me via pm to get a quote for a build.

The wheels will be built at my home, in camden, so that is where collection will be, no postage.

All sold wheels will include a donation to the forum.

If I am completely barking up the wrong tree and this is a bolloks idea please accept my apology in advance.

**EDIT - from now on can I be contacted via my mobile telecommunications device as I am often not able to check LFGSS for a day or so. Also more can be expressed in a call rather then exchanging PMs. If you are shy and dont like calling strangers then obviously PM me, but expect a few days wait...

    My number is 07five15onefive273zero.

    Cheers.

  • Hi dpres
Hope you can help. I have a chunky MTB frame with horizontal dropouts and was thinking about doing a fixed wheel project on it. Only problem is that as far as i can see there are very few or no mtb sized (wider spacing) fixed hubs on the market. Do you have a solution so you could lace up a thin 26in rims to it if found? THanks

    how wide?

MTB hub with fixed sprocket bolted to disc holes? You could even use a rear with the freehub not used on the opposite side.

  • Nice idea btw. Seems a good deal for wheelbuilding.

  • surly is your friend

  • PM'd

  • na, good idea. im gonna make some decisions and holler at you. do you have a good supplier for spokes or would it be easier if i sorted all the components myself?

also, how hard is it to un-build a wheelset? i have some dura ace babes on tubs that need a new home i think.

  • Good offer and not a bolloks idea at all. If all goes well I'd expect this to become a sticky along with other good value services offered to forum members.

There might be interest in wheel truing at a decent price. I'd also be interested in learning wheel building - perhaps having supervised DIY wheel building.

BTW you might consider offering courier delivery using Jaz -

I'll certainly be keeping this in mind.

Good suggestion.. handnt thought. Will investigate and try to get something laced from above service.

  • Hi,

I think I have PM'd everyone that got in touch with me and many thanks for all the interest!

Oliveoil I am researching a few options for you so that I can offer you the best possible solution. Tallsams idea would work, but is a bodge and I would always rather do something properly. I'l be in touch via pm when I have a proper solution in mind.

Also I will use Jaz for deliveries within London so delivered wheels are now an option.

    Cheers

  • DMR do a nice rear hub with sealed bearings that is 135mm and has a 6 bolt disc mount on one side and is threaded for a freewheel on the other. I just happen to have a couple of brand new ones if you are interested ;)

It wouldn't be hard at all, I can supply the spokes and relace the hubs to whatever clincher rims you want. It would be easier for me to supply the parts.

    Cheers.

  • amazing, thanks dpres. il look in to it. my current build is tied and soldered too, not 100% sure i wanna take them apart, but defo want a new set

I think the best hub for you is the Surly rear mountain fixed, which I can sell for £40. It is spaced to 135mm.

Pm me for a quote if you like.

  • Hey Dpres. I have a set of deep V velocity rims, but only the front wheel is machined for a brake and I need two brakes! So if I get the new rear machined rim will you be able to do a swap over? Is that also 15 squids?

    Thanks very much.

  • Just sent you a pm re rear 9speed wheel.

    Cheers!

  • pm'd about rebuilding a rear, cheers.

  • Sent you a PM. Thanks.
