MA2s are full of win. I might have bent my front one, if I have I'll be inconsolable.

Those look nice, but a NOS MA2 can still be had at that price - if you're lucky
and I seem to be lucky with NOS Mavic at the mo.

Actually the grey is pretty tempting. MA40 clone much?
I've been going cold turkey on the bike obsession for a year so these have passed me by.
What are the reports of their quality -build - longevity etc? -

My current project is Derny, based on a Swedish postman's bike with a 70cc Puch Maxi engine.

Don't mention the war. Oh no, wait, we are no longer in the 70's are we.

"it is recommended that 20 miles of use on hard surfaces should be done prior to using in the snow and ice to bed the studs in"
That's what I was doing, when the studs came out.
Other way around. 20miles or so on softer surfaces. Even then be bloody careful on asfalt. I have never lost a stud from a quality tyre (ie. those Schwalbes)
-
• #51291
You live and learn, I'll just have to hope that I've not lost too many, i.e. enough to impact on the effectiveness of the tyre.
I might ask Wiggle about why they have the above advice on their website (albeit in the review section)

From the Schwalbe website:
MARATHON WINTER
For a safer journey. You have full control on icy roads with this tyre. Even in tight bends and under violent braking everything remains under control. The spikes work best on ice when running at minimum pressure, whilst at maximum pressure the tyres can be ridden on ice-free roads with minimal road noise. In order to ensure that spikes are permanently fixed, tyres should be run in for about 40km on asphalt, while avoiding any fast acceleration or heavy braking. -

Following said advice has lost 25 from the front and two from the rear- goes to show that there are very different forces acting on the front and the rear, or I got a dud front.
Or the advice on the Schwalbe website is LIES! DAMN LIES!
-
• #51294
that advice is poor dammit; contact schwalbe and see if you can get compo/set of new tyres

This^
I had a cheapo pair when I first moved to Norway. After losing some studs, they became unpredictable. I throw them away, and invested in a £100 pair. This is after I got bored of spending lots of £s on replacing crash damaged parts, to save a little on tyres. Conditions up here are more extreme of course.
My boss has commuted on those exact tyres for two winters, and they look near new. After bedding mine in (conti's made in finland. Nokion/Soumi?), I've thrown them around trails (containing rocky sections) during periods of thaw, without ill effect.

On the North American website you can order bags of replacement studs, 12 to a bag.
If they post me three bags of studs I'll happily plug them in, and put the tyres in a cupboard* until it snows.
*This is a lie, I'll hang them off something, then have to move them somewhere else, then hang them on something else/repeat ad-infinitum

Addin those replacement studs is a PITA (i read on the interwebs). I'm considering adding studs to the outside lugs of a fatbike tyre set. The easiest way to do this it appears is to pre drill the lugs, and add the studs from the inside. Then cover with a split innertube. But the tyre pressure might be too low to support the back of the studs?
Still looking into this.........

Well, I have emailed Schwalbe and shall report back

Yes, that's kind of the point, isn't it? The juxtaposition of the action with the "Nuremberg Defence" should negate the defence in the mind of any reasonable person.
What* is* available in silver with low narrow box-section without a machined braking surface?
there are some from VO but they're kinda chunky.
I bought 3 pairs of MA2s about 3 years back for a tenner a rim. sold a pair for £70 - wishI'd kept them......
Note to self- never sell anything.
