if iOS 5 did render the 3GS or 4 as useless as 4 rendered the 3G, then I seriously doubt apple would continue to sell those 2 models.

I know a few people running the developer version of iOS 5 on a 3GS with no problems.

Good to hear, but I'm sure they were still selling the 3G after they made it slooooow.
